PS-Saddles - Ultrashort Saddles for Icelandics and Other Smaller Size Horses
The saddle is the interface between horse and rider. It needs to balance the rider from side to side and back to front, thereby helping her/him into a seat position that enables the aids to be applied without constantly fighting unbalance and restrictions.
From the horse's point of view, the saddle should spread the rider's weight onto a greater weight bearing surface and hopefully eliminate points of pressure to withers, the spine or muscle tissue. The saddle should never hinder the shoulder movement or put pressure onto the lumbar spine area.
For breeds like Icelandics, this can pose a special challenge as our horses are comparatively small and riders can be all sizes, from kid's size up to tall adults. A very common problem is the use of saddles that reach onto the lumbar vertebrae, and /or bridge, or do not match the rider's size.
Based on our research, the PS-Saddle System is the most well thought through line of saddles currently available for smaller horse breeds. The designer is Patrick Stamm of a breeding farm for Icelandics called "Schoenauer Hof" in Germany in collaboration with vets and chiropractors. By the way: PS are the initials of the designer, but also is the abbreviation for the word "Pferde-Stärke" which means horsepower in the German language.

PS exclusively offers... ...three differently shaped panel types, which can be chosen to accommodate different back shapes: Model XS for a normal shaped back, model XXS for straight, and model AS for dipped backs.
All PS-Saddle models...
...are ultra short, so that the saddle does not reach the lumbar area of the spine
...are flared out in front to eliminate pinching behind the withers
...have sweat flaps that are extremely cut backwards at the shoulders to free up space for shoulder movement
...are available in six gullet plate widths, and 16.5-18" seat sizes.
PS-Saddles are designed for an anatomically correct fit and will enable the horse to carry the rider with ease and in balance. PS-Saddles will assist you in creating a horse with a swinging back and beautiful, free movements of shoulders and hind quarters.
The price range is between US$2,300 and US$3,000, depending on model specifications and Euro exchange rate.
